Wrocław, the Giant and Iser Mountains and the District of Extinct Volcanos


Day 1:

Arrival to Wrocław. Transfer from the airport to a hotel.


Day 2:

Wrocław – a walking tour through the city: the Racławice Panorama (a famous painting depicting a victorious battle of the Polish uprisers commanded by T. Kościuszko against the Russian army in 1794), Cathedral Island with the Gothic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and the Archbishops Palace, Cathedral Bridge (called the Bridge of Lovers), Sand Island with the Blessed Virgin Mary Church and a picturesque boulevard on the bank of the Oder River; the Old Town: a Baroque ensemble of the Ossolineum Institute and the main building of the University with the ceremonial hall Aula Leopoldina, the ancient butchers’ houses, the medieval prison, the former castle of  Prussian kings (now the Municipal Museum), the Market Square with the Gothic Town Hall and merchants’ houses, Centennial Hall – one of the largest dome-shaped reinforced concrete structures in the world (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Szczytnicki Park with the Japanese Garden.


Day 3:

Jawor: a visit to the evangelical Church of Peace (a huge structure constructed of wood, loam and straw by the protestants in the 17-th century after the Westfalian Peace Agreement – now a UNESCO World Heritage site). Bolków: ruins of a castle that was constructed by dukes of the Piast Dynasty (inside you will see a small exhibition about the history of the Piast family, some models of other Silesian castles once ruled by Piasts, there is also a view tower open for visitors). Jelenia Góra: a visit to the Church of Grace (in the past evangelical, now Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Cross) designed in the 18-th century on the pattern of St. Catherine Church in Stockholm (inside there are very valuable wall paintings by F. A. Scheffler). Transfer to Karpacz.


Day 4:

All day-long hiking in the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze): A ride with the lift to Kopa (1375 m above sea level). Then hiking to Śnieżka (1603 m above sea level) – the highest mountain in the Sudety Mountains, also in Silesia and in the Czech Republic. Admiring a view from the summit and a short break in the hostel-restaurant. Walking down to the bottom of the former glacier cirque of Mały Staw (the Small Pond) (one of the most picturesque places in the Giant Mountains) - lunch in “Samotnia” hostel. Walking down to Karpacz, on the way a visit to the wooden church Wang – constructed in Norway in the 12-Ith century and transported to the Giant Mountains (Karkonosze) in the 19-th century.


Day 5:

Jagniątków: the Museum of Gerhard Hauptmann – a very famous German writer, who lived here till 1946. Szklarska Poręba – a very popular mountain resort, in the past a village of glass makers and treasure hunters: Szklarka Waterfall (one of the most beautiful in the Sudety Mountains), the Museum of Earth (an interesting exposition of rocks and minerals, a souvenir shop). Świeradów Zdrój (a picturesque spa in the Iser Mountains): a walking tour around the spa (among others visit to the drinking hall with the largest walking hall in Poland).


Day 6:

Czocha Castle – one of the most picturesque castles in Poland: mysterious interior, a beautiful view from the tower. Lubomierz – a little town famous of the Movies Festival: the Museum of Kargul and Pawlak (the heroes of the popular Polish comedy movie “Sami swoi” that was made in Lubomierz), St. Maternus Church. Grodziec – the castle on the top of an extinct volcano: if the weather is fine, you will see a beautiful view of the Sudety Mountains and the Silesian Lowlands from the castle’s tower.


Day 7:

Złotoryja – one of the oldest towns in Silesia, famous as a former gold mining centre: visiting the Museum of Gold, a short walk through the town centre. The nature reserve “Wilcza Góra” (the Wolfs Mountain) by Złotoryja – geological profile at a basalt quarry in an extinct volcano, famous of so-called “Basalt Rose” (an original pattern of basalt crystals). Transfer to Wrocław Airport.
